Copenhagen/Bern, 14 June 2023. To date, travellers in Denmark have been using closed-loop smartcards to pay for public transport. However, in the future, a digital solution will make travelling around Denmark even easier. From a pool of 21 applicants, FAIRTIQ has been selected as one of five providers who will be invited to develop a fully digital national transport solution in Denmark.

To this end, in April 2023 Rejsekort & Rejseplan A/S signed a framework agreement with FAIRTIQ and the four other companies selected in a multi-stage process. Only they will be able to participate exclusively in tenders for the project, which has been granted around 67 million euros, over the next eight years.

“We are very proud that, as a supposedly small player, we can assert ourselves alongside the big players in the mobility industry and make a significant contribution to the transition to a fully digital transport solution in Denmark,” says FAIRTIQ founder and Co-CEO Gian-Mattia Schucan. In fact, the app-based check-in/check-out solution from the Swiss company is market-leading; it is already being used successfully in many regions of Europe. Before boarding buses and trains, a swipe with a smartphone is all it takes to record the start of a journey. A further swipe when getting off ends the cost calculation. If the user forgets to check out, the app can even do this automatically (Be-Out) without any physical hardware.

It will also be possible to use buses, trains and metros throughout the whole of Denmark in this way in the future. Those responsible expect that checking in and out via an app will become the main payment method nationwide.
