Grenoble / Bern, 5 August 2025– Since May, around one hundred passengers across the M réso network – including buses and trams in the Grenoble metropolitan area, the Grésivaudan valley and the Pays Voironnais – have been trialling FAIRTIQ, a mobile pay-as-you-go app that lets users travel without buying a ticket in advance. All it takes is a swipe to start the journey before boarding, and another to end it upon exit. The app then calculates the best available fare automatically. This trial phase, led by SMMAG, reflects the region’s commitment to innovation. Already live in Normandy and Occitanie, FAIRTIQ is designed to simplify and improve access to public transport. Passengers without a season ticket can still sign up for the pilot via mobilites-m.fr.
SMMAG (the Grenoble Metropolitan Mobility Authority) has launched this six-month trial in partnership with FAIRTIQ. M réso passengers are testing an advanced technology already in use in over 50 transport networks across Europe, including several French regions.
The pilot provides an opportunity to explore FTQ Lab – a version of the FAIRTIQ app developed to make journeys easier, more flexible, and fairer.
Travel freely. Always pay the best price.
With FAIRTIQ, travel is as simple as it gets: swipe to check in before boarding and swipe again when you leave the vehicle. The app takes care of the rest, automatically calculating the most affordable fare – no need to worry about zones or ticket types.
The system is available on all M réso bus and tram lines across Grenoble, the Grésivaudan valley and the Pays Voironnais. All journeys are recorded in the app’s travel history, with payments deducted progressively.
FAIRTIQ expands its footprint in France
Already operating in several French regions, FAIRTIQ supports local transport authorities in rethinking how people move. In Occitanie, it is available on liO Train and liO Car services, alongside innovative fare models such as ‘travel more, pay less’ – particularly popular with younger passengers. Thanks to this approach, usage has surged by nearly 35%.
In Normandy, FAIRTIQ is part of the region’s integrated ticketing initiative (‘titre unique’), which aims to give passengers access to all public transport modes via a single app and harmonised pricing.
These deployments demonstrate FAIRTIQ’s role in reshaping mobility nationwide – making it smoother, more inclusive, and more sustainable. The Grenoble pilot marks another key step in this expansion.
