Mobile Pay-As-You-Go, built for everyone: FAIRTIQ now offers one integrated Pay-As-You-Go ecosystem

Bern - 03. September 2026 - FAIRTIQ has reached a new milestone in the evolution of its Mobile Pay-As-You-Go (MPAYG) technology: for the first time, the Swiss ticketing technology provider is powering a country's complete nationwide Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) ecosystem across both mobile and card-based travel.

The milestone follows the successful nationwide rollout of the Rejsekort app in Denmark, powered by FAIRTIQ's MPAYG technology. Within around 20 months of its public launch, about 90% of all Rejsekort transactions were already taking place through the app. Now, Rejsekort & Rejseplan A/S and FAIRTIQ have extended the ecosystem with Basiskort: a complementary card-based PAYG solution, also powered by FAIRTIQ, for passengers who cannot or prefer not to use a smartphone.

From MPAYG to a complete PAYG ecosystem

FAIRTIQ has built its technology around making public transport easier through MPAYG. Denmark demonstrates how that technology can now provide the foundation for a broader ticketing ecosystem: The Rejsekort app remains the primary channel, offering a seamless mobile experience for the vast majority of travellers. Basiskort complements it with a simple card-based PAYG experience for those who need or prefer a non-mobile solution. Both are powered by the same FAIRTIQ backend.

For FAIRTIQ, Basiskort therefore represents more than the introduction of a new travel medium. It expands the company's technology from MPAYG to an integrated PAYG platform capable of serving the full spectrum of traveller needs at national scale.

"A successful mobile-first strategy isn't measured by how many people use an app. It's measured by whether every traveller can access public transport in the way that works best for them," said Gian-Mattia Schucan, Founder and Co-CEO of FAIRTIQ. "Mobile should become the primary channel because it delivers the greatest value for both passengers and operators. Tap complements that strategy by ensuring accessibility and inclusion, all powered by one seamless Pay-As-You-Go ecosystem."

New economics of Automated Fare Collection (AFC)

For passengers, the PAYG ecosystem provides a simple way to travel regardless of their needs. Mobile Pay-As-You-Go is the primary channel, offering the richest and most seamless experience for the vast majority of travellers. For those who cannot or prefer not to use a smartphone, card-based Pay-As-You-Go provides a simple alternative – ensuring accessibility and inclusion without compromising ease of use.

For transport authorities, this means full passenger coverage without the complexity and cost of operating separate ticketing systems. Both channels run on FAIRTIQ's Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) platform, sharing the same backend for journey processing, fare calculation, customer accounts, business rules and operational monitoring.

And because mobile remains the primary channel, physical infrastructure only needs to be deployed where it adds value. This reduces dependency on validators and infrastructure for purchasing and loading physical cards, while a single technology platform further simplifies operations, maintenance and future development. The result is a more efficient and cost-effective approach to Automated Fare Collection (AFC).

A new chapter for FAIRTIQ

The expansion into card-based Pay-As-You-Go marks an important evolution for FAIRTIQ. Having established its Mobile Pay-As-You-Go technology across public transport networks in Europe, FAIRTIQ can now provide transport authorities with one integrated PAYG ecosystem spanning both mobile and card-based travel.

Denmark is the first nationwide implementation of this extended FAIRTIQ offering – demonstrating how Mobile Pay-As-You-Go can form the foundation of an inclusive ticketing ecosystem that serves every traveller through one technology platform.

"With Denmark, FAIRTIQ is demonstrating what the next generation of our technology can enable," said Gian-Mattia Schucan. "We can now provide regional and national transport authorities with one Pay-As-You-Go platform that combines the simplicity and efficiency of mobile with an inclusive card-based solution – giving them the flexibility to build the right channel mix for their passengers without building separate ticketing systems."
