FAIRTIQ launches BIBO market test: season ticket level comfort without the subscription

Written by Yasmine Bounasse | PR & Events | March 10, 2026

Bern, Switzerland – March 9, 2026 It’s a universal frustration for commuters: jumping onto a train only to realise mid-journey that you forgot to "swipe" to start your trip. Today, the Swiss mobility leader FAIRTIQ, in collaboration with an alliance of 10 transport companies, is launching a definitive solution to this problem.

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, FAIRTIQ is launching the pilot phase of a groundbreaking feature known in the industry as “Be-In, Be-Out” (BIBO). The concept is seamless: the app automatically detects when a passenger is travelling on public transport and issues a valid ticket—eliminating any need for manual swiping (or tapping) at the start or end of a journey.

Public Transport – Zero Swipes Required

Until now, Swiss travellers had to manually start and end their journeys in the app with a swipe. This new feature aims to remove that step entirely. The app runs in the background, autonomously recognising the moment a trip begins.

For users, this means less stress and maximum convenience. No more worrying about whether a journey was correctly started; no more risk of fines due to a forgotten swipe. Just hop on and go — zero swipes required. FAIRTIQ describes this as “Season Ticket-level comfort for everyone” but without the upfront payment commitment. As always, users only pay for the trips they actually take.

Full Flexibility for Occasional Travelers

Occasional travellers stand to benefit the most, gaining the same level of ease as season-ticket holders without the fixed costs or long-term commitment. Simultaneously, this solution lowers barriers for seniors or people with disabilities, for whom every extra digital step can be a challenge. By minimising interaction, public transport becomes more accessible for all.

Privacy by Design

Following "Privacy by Design" principles, FAIRTIQ has engineered the system to ensure data protection is guaranteed at all times. Data is primarily collected and processed locally on the user's smartphone. Non-transport-related data is deleted. Only when the app detects an actual journey is the relevant data securely transmitted to the FAIRTIQ backend for route calculation and billing. Additionally, the feature is optimised to ensure daily use without excessive battery drain.

Launch of the "FAIRTIQ Go" Partner Alliance

The new feature is being developed and tested alongside an alliance of ten Swiss transport companies. The pilot is currently running within a closed user group under the name "FAIRTIQ Go."

Interested users can sign up for the market test at https://fairtiq.com/en/fairtiq-go-testphase. Direct feedback from travellers will flow into the further development of the technology before a broader nationwide rollout later this year.

Gian-Mattia Schucan, Founder and Co-CEO of FAIRTIQ, states: “Our goal is to make public transport as simple as possible. When no one has to think about swiping anymore, we have taken a massive step toward that goal.”

Note: The feature will remain voluntary even after the official Swiss rollout. Users who prefer to swipe manually will still be able to do so.

With over 350 million journeys recorded and 1.7 million active monthly users, FAIRTIQ is a global leader in mobile ticketing. As Switzerland currently tests myRIDE—a new distance-based pricing system—FAIRTIQ is taking the next technological leap by automating the detection of the journey itself. This marks a double evolution for Swiss ticketing: smarter pricing combined with effortless use.

About FAIRTIQ

With over 350 million journeys, FAIRTIQ is the world leader and pioneer in mobile pay-as-you-go (MPAYG) solutions. Operating in 13 countries—including Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and the UK—the platform makes public transport more accessible for 1.7 million active monthly users. More than 100 leading transport operators and authorities rely on FAIRTIQ’s technology.

FAIRTIQ’s journey began with Check-In/Check-Out (CICO) via a simple swipe. This evolved into Check-In/Be-Out (CIBO), known as "Smart Stop," which automated the end of the journey. The next logical step is Be-In/Be-Out (BIBO): fully automated ticketing with no manual interaction required.

About the Partner Alliance

The BIBO technology is being developed and tested in close cooperation with an alliance of ten Swiss transport companies: Appenzeller Bahnen (AB), Aargau Verkehr (AVA), Busbetrieb Solothurn und Umgebung (BSU), Regionalverkehr Bern-Solothurn (RBS), Rhätische Bahn (RhB), Regionale Verkehrsbetriebe Baden-Wettingen (RVBW), Transports publics fribourgeois (TPF), Verkehrsbetriebe Luzern (VBL), Verkehrsbetriebe Biel (VB/TPB), and Zugerland Verkehrsbetriebe (ZVB). Together, these partners are driving the next generation of digital ticketing with the goal of making public transport in Switzerland even simpler and more accessible.
