Bratislava/Bern, 19 August 2025– ZSSK, Slovakia’s national railway operator, and FAIRTIQ are joining forces for a one-year nationwide pilot of mobile pay-as-you-go (MPAYG) ticketing. The joint initiative aims to simplify access to public transport and provide deeper insights into passenger mobility patterns across the country.
Set to go live in the coming months, the pilot will include all domestic routes operated by ZSSK, including iconic regional lines such as the Tatra Electric Railway (TEŽ) and the Cogwheel Railway (OŽ). With the FAIRTIQ app, passengers simply swipe to start their journey and swipe again when they arrive—no need to plan routes or select zones in advance.
“More than 52% of our customers already use digital services to purchase tickets via mobile or online platforms. FAIRTIQ is therefore a natural continuation for us on the path toward simpler and more convenient train travel,” explains ZSSK’s CEO, Peter Helexa. “Partnering with a company with rich experience across various European countries will help us bring innovative solutions to Slovakia.”
This is FAIRTIQ’s first collaboration with a national railway operator in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) offering full network coverage. While the FAIRTIQ solution is already live in the Zlín region of neighbouring Czech Republic, this new partnership marks a strategic expansion of the MPAYG model in the region.
“Together with ZSSK, we’re bringing the future of public transport to Slovakia,” says Gian-Mattia Schucan, FAIRTIQ founder and co-CEO. “Our shared goal is to make travel easier and more intuitive—so that more people choose public transport, more often.”
Beyond convenience, the pilot will generate anonymised data on travel patterns, helping ZSSK better understand and meet passenger needs—while maintaining the highest standards of data privacy. If successful, the pilot could pave the way for a long-term nationwide solution that supports a seamless and user-centred public transport experience.
