Record-breaking year for FAIRTIQ as passengers across Europe swipe right for mobile pay-as-you-go

January 13, 2026 Record-breaking year for FAIRTIQ as passengers across Europe swipe right for mobile pay-as-you-go

  • Record 131m journeys made using FAIRTIQ technology in 2025
  • International growth continued with new schemes launched in six different countries
  • FAIRTIQ has published a new video for explaining how mobile pay-as-you-go works in the UK market

Swiss digital ticketing company FAIRTIQ has reported new records were set in 2025 for the number of journeys, users, and distance travelled using its mobile pay-as-you-go technology.

Mobile pay-as-you-go (mPAYG), also called digital pay-as-you-go (dPAYG) in some countries, allows passengers to travel using an app on their mobile phone instead of physical tickets or smartcards. With FAIRTIQ now operating in a dozen countries across Europe, 2025 saw:

  • 131m journeys made, an increase of 68% on total journeys in 2024

  • Almost 1.1bn miles travelled in total using FAIRTIQ technology – the equivalent of travelling from Earth to the sun and back six times

  • A record high of 1.7m monthly users across Europe set in October 2025

  • New FAIRTIQ schemes going live in six countries: UK, Italy, Germany, France, Norway, and Sweden

FAIRTIQ’s latest project launch was in the UK in November, as part of the Department for Transport’s trial of digital pay-as-you-go technology in the UK market. In partnership with Northern Trains, passengers travelling on the Sheffield-Rotherham-Doncaster line can use FAIRTIQ’s technology to pay for their journey. Passengers have travelled thousands of miles successfully already using the technology, with this new video explaining how the technology works for UK users.

FAIRTIQ offers an incredibly simple user experience: passengers just swipe once to start their journey, then swipe again to end it. The FAIRTIQ app on their phone identifies the journey they have made, and its intelligent algorithm calculates the correct fare. This creates a hardware-free ticketing system, with no need for expensive infrastructure like card readers or gates.

Gian-Mattia Schucan, Founder and co-CEO at FAIRTIQ, said: “These are incredibly exciting times in the world of ticketing technology. 2025 broke all records for mobile pay-as-you-go, but this is still just the start of a journey. We’re forecasting rapid growth will continue in 2026, as more passengers in more countries discover the joy and ease of paying for their travel with just one swipe.”

Almost 340m journeys have been made on FAIRTIQ in total and the technology is operational in a dozen countries, including national systems in Denmark, Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein. In Denmark for example, whose population is similar in size to Scotland or Yorkshire, within just 18 months FAIRTIQ’s 5*-rated app is now used for more than half of all public transport journeys in the country across all modes (Train, Tram, Bus and Subway).

  • About FAIRTIQ: With almost 340 million trips completed, FAIRTIQ has established itself as the global leader and pioneer in postpaid ticketing and digital pay-as-you-go (DPAYG) solutions. Serving up to 1.7 million active users each month, FAIRTIQ operates currently in thirteen countries—Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. The platform provides regional coverage in 25 areas and national coverage in four, making public transport more accessible and user-friendly. More than 100 leading public transport operators and authorities rely on the FAIRTIQ solution and our rapid international expansion continues to attract new users worldwide.

  • How FAIRTIQ works: Passengers download the app, start it with one swipe before entering the rail station and receive a valid ticket without having to enter their destination. When changing trains or modes, the app automatically recognises the change and continues to monitor the journey. When the passenger arrives at the destination, they simply swipe to end the journey. If they forget, the app sends a notification or automatically ends the journey.
