Berlin, February 6, 2025 – Travelling by public transport in Baden-Württemberg is now easier and more flexible than ever thanks to the FAIRTIQ app, which launched in the German state on 4 February 2025. As the new CiCoBW ('check-in-check-out Baden-Württemberg') licensee, FAIRTIQ is expanding its presence in the country. As a result, its ticketing technology is now available and operational across three German federal states.
With the FAIRTIQ app, seamless travel on regional and local public transport from Karlsruhe to Freiburg or from Stuttgart to Heidelberg is now only one swipe away. The app works in sync with the CiCoBW system, which the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport and regional transport associations introduced in summer 2023. Thanks to CiCoBW, passengers can enjoy limitless travel across the state's public transport network with a single swipe of their smart device screen.
Travelling between Baden-Württemberg and Switzerland is now also easier because CiCoBW is available for journeys to and from Basel Bad, Waldshut, Thayngen and Constance. However, passengers who begin their journey outside the CiCoBW area of validity still have to stop their journey in the app and change their region settings once they reach the CiCoBW boundary. There are currently some 20,000 active FAIRTIQ app users in Baden-Württemberg, and monthly journeys recorded in the app now total 100,000.
FAIRTIQ expands its presence in Germany
In addition to Baden-Württemberg, the FAIRTIQ app is available and operational across the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Bremen, as well as in Switzerland, the Austrian region of Vorarlberg and 15 other German transport associations. Innovative, flexible and user-friendly ticketing solutions like FAIRTIQ help strengthen local public transport provision in the long term because they allow transport companies to retain their existing customers and target potential new users at the same time. FAIRTIQ is also a flexible alternative to the Deutschlandticket and provides transport companies with stable revenues and effective control mechanisms that remain unaffected by changes in the political landscape. Customers also benefit from greater flexibility when they purchase their tickets through the app. At the provider level, some transport operators and associations are already experimenting with distance-based fares. This approach not only makes life easier for bus and train users but also generates valuable insights into travel behaviour for the transport companies. Göttingen, which became FAIRTIQ's first German partner in 2019, has already introduced a distance-based fare model, while the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) is currently funding MPAYG (mobile pay-as-you-go) projects in other regions like Braunschweig. The app makes it possible to set flexible incentives and motivate passengers to use public transport. For example, Würzburg rewards frequent travellers with shopping vouchers, while Flensburg provides free transport for volunteers. In Erfurt, users benefit from a 10% discount on single and child tickets.
