Denmark’s Public Transport Goes Digital: The Rejsekort app launches nationwide

September 04, 2024 Denmark’s Public Transport Goes Digital: The Rejsekort app launches nationwide

Bern, 04 September 2024. The Danish public transportation system has reached a significant milestone with the nationwide launch of the new Rejsekort app, developed by FAIRTIQ in collaboration with Rejsekort & Rejseplan A/S. Starting today, public transport users aged 18 and above in Denmark can easily travel on trains, buses, trams, and the metro with just one swipe on their smartphones. Powered by FAIRTIQ’s advanced mobile pay-as-you-go (MPAYG) technology, the app automatically detects transfers and ensures a seamless travel experience. The Rejsekort app is now available for download in both the App Store and Google Play Store.

User-Centric Development and Gradual Roll-out

In December 2023, FAIRTIQ was chosen by Rejsekort & Rejseplan A/S to develop a digital ticketing solution that meets  Danish travellers' needs. Surveys revealed that one of the major drawbacks of the existing chip-based “Rejsekort” was the physical check-in and check-out process. In response, FAIRTIQ introduced “Rejsekort as an app”, a mobile check-in/be-out system, in just six months.

“We’re witnessing a transformative moment in Denmark’s public transport history,” said Jens Willars, CCO of Rejsekort & Rejseplan A/S. “For the first time, all travellers have access to a fully digital ticketing solution, making the use of all public transport forms easier than ever before. We are proud to meet our customers’ needs and make public transportation more accessible.”

The initial version of the Rejsekort app was released in April 2024 as part of a controlled roll-out, limited to 2,000 users—a cap reached in just 40 minutes. Early adopters used the app for their daily commutes, allowing FAIRTIQ and Rejsekort & Rejseplan A/S to monitor the system’s performance under real-world conditions. Their feedback was instrumental in further refining the app. Danish Minister of Transport Thomas Danielsen was among the first users and shared his enthusiasm on social media. As of today, the Rejsekort app is available to all eligible travellers in Denmark aged 18 and above, with special tariffs for adults, seniors, young adults and a special discount (mængderabat) in Jutland .

FAIRTIQ founder and Co-CEO Gian-Mattia Schucan expressed his excitement about the response: “We are thrilled that our innovative solution has been so well received by Danish public transport users. The short implementation period of just six months presented some challenges, but the strong collaboration with our partner Rejsekort & Rejseplan A/S enabled the FAIRTIQ team to overcome them successfully.”

Looking Ahead: Transitioning to a Fully Digital Rejsekort

Currently, Rejsekort is available both as a digital app and in its traditional chip card form. In 2023, the chip-based Rejsekort processed over 176 million journeys across Denmark’s buses, trains, metro, and trams. However, there is a long-term plan to gradually replace the chip card with the newly launched digital Rejsekort. While this transition will unfold over the coming years, Rejsekort remains committed to offering an alternative  solution for those who prefer or require it.

Travelling with FAIRTIQ

Before boarding a train, tram or bus, passengers start their journey with one swipe in the FAIRTIQ app. This means they have a valid ticket for the entire public transport network in the corresponding region. When they arrive at their destination, they swipe again to end the cost calculation. The app uses location services to register the route travelled and calculates the correct fare.
