Rome/Bern - February 26, 2024 - As part of the Open Italy Program 2023/2024, initiated by Elis, a non-profit organisation, FAIRTIQ implemented a project for innovative travel data collection in Umbria in close collaboration with Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and its companies Trenitalia and Busitalia.
The 'Umbria Moving' project, initiated under the Open Italy programme of ELIS Innovation Hub, aimed to explore innovative solutions for optimising the purchase and travel experience of Trenitalia customers. Leveraging FAIRTIQ's expertise in intermodal digital payments, the project focused on tracking user movements across multimodal transport modes.
"Trenitalia's primary objective is to enhance the level of digitization in local and national public transport services," said Manuela Riccardi, Digital Payment Specialist at Trenitalia. "Through 'Umbria Moving,' we aimed to address existing challenges in payment experience and system usability, particularly in the context of multimodal transport."
FAIRTIQ, a Swiss-based tech company renowned for its user-friendly digital payment app, provided the technological backbone for the project. With its seamless interface and positive user feedback, FAIRTIQ emerged as the ideal partner for Trenitalia's digital transformation journey.
FAIRTIQ Co-CEO Gian-Mattia Schucan: “The Ferrovie dello Stato Group is a highly diversified Company, a Group that includes corporations operating in both rail and road transport. So collaborating was a no-brainer and we are glad we could make it happen. We can’t wait to continue working together and perhaps one day enable travel all the way from Denmark to Calabria!”
The PoC, which focused on the experimentation of FAIRTIQ's route tracking capabilities, yielded promising results. The application demonstrated overall reliability and received positive feedback from testers.
Looking ahead, Trenitalia plans to explore further integration of FAIRTIQ's functionalities, including in-app pricing and ticketing for transport services, with the ultimate goal of nationwide implementation. The success of the 'Umbria Moving' project underscores the potential of digital solutions in revolutionising the public transport landscape.
As the project concludes, stakeholders are optimistic about the future of digitised public transport in Italy. By embracing innovative technologies and fostering collaboration between industry players, Trenitalia, FAIRTIQ, and ELIS Innovation Hub are poised to lead the way towards a more efficient, user-centric transport ecosystem.
